THE SHOPS AT TANFORAN
The Shops at Tanforan is located on the site of the Tanforan Racetrack, which was used as a temporary relocation center for Bay Area Japanese Americans during WWII. When the shopping center was built on the site, it served as a regional mall for the growing Peninsula population. Wattson Breevast recently purchased the property and is redeveloping the shopping center in two phases to create a state-of-the-art center.
The existing center is currently 965,000 sq. ft.. Phase I will add an additional 30,000 sq. ft. of shopping and public space including new restaurants that are being developed. Phase II will include the addition of a 77,000 sq. ft. multi-screen cinema and two new parking structures with spaces for an additional 987 cars, bringing the onsite parking capacity to 4,711 spaces. The redeveloped center will have approximately 1,100,000 sq. ft..
The building will have a new architectural design, and is being designed and will be constructed to obtain credits in accordance with the LEED Green Building Rating System. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is voluntary system that evaluated environmental performance from a whole building perspective over the building's lifetime.
